Be a self-regulated learner

This is a long post but also the most essential post for HPE bot. Many of you will be used to learning in a standardised way. You may follow a curriculum with lectures, practicums and other scheduled activities and with end-of-module or end-of-semester type of examinations. That means that the process of learning is quite predictable and structured. In such a learning environment you need to focus on what you need to learn but often less on how you need to learn. Most e-learning programs are the same, the content is already in the platform and the way you go through it is pre-structured.

How else is this with HPE-bot. Here, there is no content that is pre-loaded onto the platform. It is created in the here-and-now, the moment you ask a question, request a magic question, call for a decision-making or critical reasoning question the content is produced and new. All is created to suit your personal circumstances; your domain, your level, your preferred learning pace, your country and cultural context, and even your language.

That is an enormous flexibility which is offered to you.

But this flexibility comes with an advice.

You need to be able to self-direct and self-regulate your learning and that is not easy.

All the posts in this blog are intended to help you with your self-regulated learning. Does HPE try to replace a teacher. NO, it should not. Or put the other way, if a teacher could simply be replaced by AI, they should be replaced by AI. But a teacher who uses and knows how to use AI, and a student who uses and knows how to use AI can be better that a teacher or a student without AI.

So, how can you be a self-regulated learner?

Well there are different models but here is one that is intuitive and straightforward.

To self-regulate you should be deliberate and purposeful with regard to:

  • Forethought, planning and activation

    • Plan your learning with HPE bot. Generate learning objectives or learning goals to guide your learning. Workshop these learning goals with HPE bot to generate questions that will guide your learning and let your study be guided by those questions. But do not fear to ask follow-up questions when you think of them. Follow your curiosity.

  • Monitoring

    • Regularly during your study, take a step back and ask yourself: Do I really understand this. Write a summary of what you have learned and ask the Bot to give you feedback and necessary additions. Check if you can join the dots (see the post on active learning). You can also use the question buttons - the ones with the question mark for application of knowledge/decision making questions and the smileys for critical reasoning and deeper insight questions.

  • Control

    • Even if you have asked follow-up questions because of curiosity make sure you don't go down rabbit holes. So, keep you initial questions or learning goals as a guide and make sure you finish all of them. But limit your time with the Bot, don't study for hours in a row. That long in a row is not effective and certainly not efficient. Give yourself regular breaks. If you have a lot of subject matter to cover, make a schedule over days and keep to it. Don't worry that you will lose information; you can reopen chats from previous days. But you can also copy and paste your chat into you notes. Just click on the copy icon in left window under the name of each chat. Distributing your learning rather than cramming it all into one session is so much more effective.

  • Reaction and reflection

    • Finally, revisit what you have learned. Use the history of your chats. Go quickly over your notes or start by asking the Bot to summarise the main points for you and add them to your own notes. Revisiting what you have learned at least once will help you to better retrieve your knowledge and understanding when you need it, either during an examination, during your workplace learning, any internships or when you have become a healthcare professional.
