How do I stay interesting for the job market at a time of genAI

It goes without saying that generative AI is disruptive and students and recent graduates may often find it difficult to know what to study or how to prepare yourself for the job market.

I don't have a ready-made and simple solution. Also, it is never wise to make predictions especially not about the future (attributed to a Danish politician in the earl 20th century).

But that being said, there is some agreement amongst the experts in the AI and education sphere about the following advices.

1) Learn about the AI technology but with the technology. Learning about genAI is not like learning how to operate a dishwasher - by reading the manual and pressing the right buttons. It may be wiser to see it as learning to communicate with a rapidly developing non-human intelligence. And of course there are many things genAI cannot do or does incorrectly, but the model…

Simple prompts for quick double check

As a basic principle, always cross-reference critical information (clinical guidelines, medication dosages, legal/ethical standards, research findings) with authoritative external sources regardless of the AI's confidence level. The AI companion is a learning tool, not a replacement for peer-reviewed literature, clinical guidelines, or expert consultation. But if information is less critical and you still want to quickly check whether you can trust it, these are prompts you can use (These are not specific to Wise-Owl but can be used with any internet search or other AI-based learning)

  1. "Can you provide sources or references for this information so I can verify it independently?"

    • Use this when the companion provides factual claims that should be verifiable

  2. "Explain the reasoning behind this answer step-by-step, identifying any assumptions you're making."

    • Helps reveal the logic chain and potential gaps in the information

  3. "What are the most common misconceptions about this topic, and how does your explanation…

Differentiated depth of learning

Sometimes, you as teacher have a class with students at vastly different levels of understanding. Some students might grasp the subject quickly and are ready for more complex concepts, while others are still struggling with basic concepts. As a teacher, you cannot simultaneously provide superficial overviews for some and deep, challenging content for others during the same lesson. But you want to be fair and equitable to every student and you want them all to have the same quality learning experience. There are different strategies by which Wise-Owl can help you.

Here are two:

The tiered exploration station (an example from a biology lesson)

Flow diagram: Teacher introduces topic (10 min) → Students self-assess readiness →

GROUP A (struggling): Tutor Mode (Conversation Starters + Magic Question)

GROUP B (progressing): Tutor Mode (Deep Dive + Assessor Mode - Applied Knowledge)

Project-based learning scope management

When students are working on a longer, they can be struggling to scope their research or development questions appropriately. Some choose topics too broad, others too narrow, and the teacher or facilitator cannot meet with each team multiple times to help them refine their focus while also managing other course responsibilities. Here are two examples of strategies that can be used by the facilitator to support the students and ensure that they all start on the same page.

The scope refinement pathway

Flow: START → Tutor Mode (Conversation Starters) → Tutor Mode (Deep Dive)   → Coach Mode (Study Planner) → Assessor Mode (Critical Reasoning)

What it achieves: This strategy helps students systematically test whether their research or design question is appropriately scoped by first exploring the breadth of their topic, then examining depth, creating a realistic timeline, and finally critically evaluating feasibility. Students emerge with a well-calibrated research question that…
