Wise-Owl learner strategies: suggestions

Public·3 members

You need to teach this to someone else

Whether you're giving a presentation, leading a study session, or actually teaching, you need to know the material well enough not just to understand it but to help others understand it. Teaching requires a deeper level of mastery than learning for yourself—you need to anticipate questions, explain clearly, and be prepared for different ways people might struggle. The strategies below will help you organise your knowledge for teaching, identify potential areas of confusion before they come up, and practice explaining in ways that make sense to others, ultimately deepening your own understanding in the process.

Each strategy starts with a flow diagram showing the order in which modes and functions are used, followed by an explanation of how this strategy would work for your issue and then examples of prompts or question you can type or paste into the chat window.

Have a look at these four and choose one that suits your situation best. Remember, Wise-Owl is here to help you with your study; it does not do your study for you. Learning is always effortful, even with AI, but it is an investment in your future. Your degree might help you getting into the labour market, but the quality of your learning is what makes you successful in your career.

Strategy A: Comprehensive teaching preparation

Strategy A

  • Flow: Tutor Mode → Conversation Starters → Deep Dive → Coach Mode → Study Notes (teaching outline) → Simulator Mode → Teaching/Feedback session

  • How it works: Deeply learn the content, organise it pedagogically, then practice teaching with feedback

  • Example prompts:

    • In Tutor Mode → Conversation Starters: "What are the key questions I should address when teaching [topic]?"

    • Click Deep Dive: "What depth of knowledge do I need to handle questions?"

    • In Study Notes: "Help me organise my content into a logical teaching sequence"

    • "What examples, analogies, and activities should I include?"

    • In Teaching/Feedback session: "I'm going to practice teaching this. Simulate a group of learners and give me feedback"

Strategy B: Rehearsal and refinement

Strategy B

  • Flow: Simulator Mode → Study Group (practice audience) → Assessor Mode → Oral Examination (tough questions) → Simulator Mode → Teaching/Feedback → Coach Mode → Portfolio Coach

  • How it works: Practice teaching multiple times with progressively challenging audiences and questions

  • Example prompts:

    • In Study Group: "I need to practice teaching [topic]. Ask questions as I go"

    • "Some of you pretend to understand easily, others struggle, others are sceptical"

    • In Oral Examination: "What difficult questions might I be asked when teaching this?"

    • In Teaching/Feedback session: [Upload your teaching plan/slides] "Give me detailed feedback on this teaching material"

    • "How can I make this more engaging and clear?"

    • Revise and repeat: "I've updated my approach. Evaluate this version"

Strategy C: Complete teaching preparation system

Strategy C

  • Flow: Tutor Mode → Deep Dive (expert knowledge) → Coach Mode → Study Notes (lesson plan) → Simulator Mode → Study Group (practice audience) → Assessor Mode → Oral Examination (hard questions) → Tutor Mode → Conversation Starters (teaching strategies) → Coach Mode → Portfolio Coach (teaching feedback) → Simulator Mode → Teaching/Feedback Session → Assessor Mode → Critical Reasoning (anticipate questions) → Coach Mode → Study Planner (teaching timeline)

  • How it works: Master content deeply, create lesson plan, practice with friendly audience, prepare for hard questions, learn teaching methods, get feedback on approach, simulate actual teaching, prepare for challenges, create delivery timeline

  • Example prompts:

    • Tutor Mode → Deep Dive: "I need expert-level knowledge of [topic] to teach it well"

    • Coach Mode → Study Notes: "Help me create a lesson plan for teaching [topic] to [audience]"

    • Simulator Mode → Study Group: "I'm practicing my teaching. Be my first audience"

    • Assessor Mode → Oral Examination: "What hard questions might I be asked when teaching?"

    • Tutor Mode → Conversation Starters: "What teaching strategies work best for [topic]?"

    • Coach Mode → Portfolio Coach: [Teaching plan] "Feedback on my teaching approach?"

    • Simulator Mode → Teaching/Feedback Session: "Simulate my actual teaching session"

    • Assessor Mode → Critical Reasoning: "What challenging scenarios might arise?"

    • Coach Mode → Study Planner: "Create a timeline for my teaching preparation"

Strategy D: Iterative teaching mastery

Strategy D

  • Flow: Tutor Mode → Conversation Starters (topic overview) → Coach Mode → Study Notes (teaching outline) → Simulator Mode → Role Play (teach draft version) → Assessor Mode → Applied Knowledge (check my understanding) → Coach Mode → Portfolio Coach (iteration 1 feedback) → Tutor Mode → Magic Question (what I'm missing) → Simulator Mode → Study Group (teach revision) → Assessor Mode → Critical Reasoning → Coach Mode → Portfolio Coach (final feedback) → Simulator Mode → Teaching/Feedback Session (final)

  • How it works: Learn content, outline teaching, teach draft version, test your understanding, get feedback, find gaps, teach improved version, handle tough questions, final feedback, final simulation

  • Example prompts:

    • Tutor Mode → Conversation Starters: "Overview of [topic] I need to teach"

    • Coach Mode → Study Notes: "Create teaching outline with key points and examples"

    • Simulator Mode → Role Play: "Let me try teaching a rough draft version"

    • Assessor Mode → Applied Knowledge: "Test my understanding of what I'm teaching"

    • Coach Mode → Portfolio Coach: "Feedback on my first teaching attempt?"

    • Tutor Mode → Magic Question: "What important aspects am I not covering?"

    • Simulator Mode → Study Group: "Let me teach the improved version"

    • Assessor Mode → Critical Reasoning: "Challenge me with tough analytical questions"

    • Coach Mode → Portfolio Coach: "Final feedback before I teach for real?"

    • Simulator Mode → Teaching/Feedback Session: "Final teaching simulation"
